The Font Outlines

The Free Software Foundation is developing and supplying three free Unicode fonts, one with serifs, like Times, called FreeSerif, one without serifs, like Helvetica or Arial, called FreeSans, and one monospaced like Courier called FreeMono. According to the foundation's Free Software Definition, it is not necessary to give credit or ask permission for using, modifying or redistributing the fonts. In fact, the Free Universal Character Set Outline Font Initiative intends for the outlines to be used in exactly the ways done here. The iniative's administrator, Primoz Peterlin from Slovenia, has posted a page listing the sources of the various outlines compiled in the fonts. This is useful for historical and possibly legal reasons.

YNLC has begun with the FreeSerif font to develop the YNLCserif font. In future we hope also to base a YNLCsans font on the FreeSans font. In keeping with the spirit of its origin's, YNLCserif is distributed with the same cost and restrictions as FreeSerif (see above). Further, the GSUB and GPOS tables added by YNLC (see Font Programming) can be viewed and modified with Microsoft VOLT. The special VOLT information which provides easy access to these tables has not been removed. Other font developers will find these tables useful as there are nothing quite like them on the Microsoft VOLT site.

Using the inexpensive Windows application Font Creator from High Logic, literally thousands of changes were made to the FreeSerif outline font to produce YNLCserif. Many new character glyphs and some glyph alternates were added to complete the set of characters needed to write or describe Yukon languages. Many outlines were modified. A lot of work was done on spacing, particularly with the Combining Diacritical Marks. Many postscript names were added by hand. Work was also done on the metrics to get the characters to display at appropriate sizes and line spacing. Further improvements could likely be made in all areas. All four faces, medium, italic, bold and bold italic, were modified as needed for Yukon use. The four faces have different numbers of glyphs, an inconsistency inherited from FreeSerif, so inconsistencies may appear among the faces with non Yukon uses.
