Native Language Teacher Training

The Yukon Native Language Centre has partnered in the development of three levels of Native Language Teacher training:

The Certificate and Diploma programs are accredited by Yukon College and taught by the staff of the Centre. The programs are designed to prepare participants to become professional classroom teachers of their native languages. Participants teach Native Languages in the Yukon, British Columbia, Alaska, and the Northwest Territories. To date, more than a dozen distinct languages have been represented at program training sessions. The first Certificates were awarded in 1986, and by June 2010 there were 91 graduates of the program. The first Diplomas were awarded in 1993 and by 2010, 30 Yukon Teachers had received Diplomas.

The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Native Language Education is awarded by the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Students take courses at UAF as well as YNLC.
